County Commissioner: Annexation won’t lower County’s costs

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry made headlines earlier this week when he announced a plan to annex 23 square miles and 22,000 people to the north and northwest of the city limits.

Not everyone is thrilled with the idea. Allen County Commissioner Nelson Peters tells WOWO news the move will lower how much tax money the County takes in, without lowering the County’s costs.

“One would think that it would create a less-expensive ‘per head’ cost for service, and while it might for the City, it’s not likely that it will County-wide,” Peters said.

Tuesday Northwest Allen County Schools said they could lose nearly $2.5-million a year in property tax revenue, and that could lead to a cut in the transportation budget.
