INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A private company’s plans to increase Indiana lottery revenues are drawing concern from critics who worry the poor will pay the price.

Rhode Island-based GTECH Corp. says it won’t target low-income neighborhoods to boost sales but will replace retailers in those areas who leave its network.

The company was hired in October to increase Indiana lottery revenue by $500 million over five years.

Critics tell The Indianapolis Star that the company’s failure to disclose which ZIP codes it will advertise in suggests it isn’t being forthcoming.

GTECH spokeswoman Angela Wiczek says that information is redacted because it’s a trade secret. She says the company doesn’t plan to expand in areas where household income is less than 60 percent of the state median.
