Daniels Clarifies Remarks about Regional Campuses

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) – Purdue University President Mitch Daniels has clarified his remarks about the role of Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne and other regional campuses.

Daniels sent a letter Monday to four IPFW faculty members who asked him to recant his recent comments during a public radio broadcast that the role of IPFW didn't include offering doctoral programs and conducting research.

Daniels wrote in his letter that Purdue's position “is to align precisely with the direction of the Commission for Higher Education.” He says the IPFW faculty correctly pointed out that research and scholarly activities “are extremely important to the needs of … local and regional economies.”

Daniels says he was simply differentiating the missions of Purdue's Research I institution in West Lafayette from that of its campuses in Fort Wayne, Calumet and Westville.
