‘Day of Unity’ in Indianapolis Thanks Police

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A crowd gathered in downtown Indianapolis to offer their thanks to the city's police, including an officer fatally shot in the line of duty.

Police Chief Rick Hite told the crowd on Monument Circle to thank a police officer if they made it to work safely Friday.

WTHR-TV reports the noon event was part of a community Day of Unity. The event was also arranged to thank neighborhoods that fight crime.

The event comes in a violent year in Indianapolis, which is on pace to rival its worst-ever year for homicides. The event was the brainchild of the Fraternal Order of Police. It also honored slain police officer Perry Renn.

Renn was fatally shot by a gunman with an assault rifle July 5.
