DNR Warns Hoosiers To Treat All Ice As ‘Thin Ice’ As Winter Activities Begin

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — With winter recreation underway across the state, Indiana Conservation Officers are urging Hoosiers to use extreme caution on frozen ponds, lakes, and waterways. While thousands safely enjoy ice fishing, skating, and other winter activities each year, officials warn that several people also drown annually after falling through thin or unstable ice.

Authorities say the safest approach is to assume all ice is thin unless it has been proven safe.

The DNR advises residents to put safety first when heading outdoors and to be aware that freezing conditions can vary widely. Snow cover can make ice appear solid while actually preventing it from freezing as quickly or as evenly. Ice formed from snow and rain is also weaker than clear, solid ice.

Among the safety tips recommended by conservation officers:

  • Treat all ice as unsafe until tested.

  • Use an ice auger to check thickness—4 inches is recommended for ice fishing and 5 inches for snowmobiling.

  • Stay off the ice if you don’t know how thick it is.

  • Wear a life jacket or flotation coat.

  • Carry ice picks and rope, and never test ice thickness alone.

  • Tell someone where you plan to be before heading out.

Officials also warn against attempting to rescue pets or wildlife that fall through the ice. Instead, they urge the public to call trained emergency responders who have the proper equipment.

The DNR notes that ice can be unpredictable, especially around flowing water, underground springs, sandy areas, and locations frequented by waterfowl—all of which can create dangerously thin patches.

Conservation officers encourage residents to enjoy winter activities but emphasize making safety a top priority.
