Driver fatally Shot after Elkhart Police Chase, Identified

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) – Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by northern Indiana police after he led them on a chase.

Indiana State Police say 31-year-old Christopher James Ryckeart of Elkhart was shot dead Sunday night while allegedly backing his truck into the path of officers trying to arrest him.

Sgt. Trent Smith says three Elkhart City Police officers discharged their guns at Ryckeart, who died at the scene. Smith says the names of the officers are expected to be released Tuesday.

No other injuries were reported.

Smith says Ryckeart was shot behind a house near downtown Elkhart, about 15 miles east of South Bend, after a 40-minute chase that at one point crossed the state line into Michigan and involved several police agencies. The truck had been reported stolen.
