Driver in Critical Condition After Water Rescue

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Fire department divers pulled a woman from an SUV that submerged in an Indianapolis waterway after it careened off a city street.

Fire Capt. Rita Reith says the woman in her 20s was taken to a hospital in critical condition after she was pulled from Fall Creek on the city's northeast side Friday morning.

Reith says some bystanders jumped into the water and tried to rescue the woman. Other bystanders saw them use a hammer to break out a driver's side window, but the current pushed the SUV downstream and below the water.

Witnesses say the SUV was driving fast and ran a red light before it veered off Allisonville Road and entered the water.
