Family Suing Marion County Sheriff over Inmate’s Suicide

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The family of an Indianapolis man who apparently hanged himself in a Marion County Jail cell is seeking damages in a federal lawsuit against the sheriff's department.

The lawsuit alleges that the actions of Marion County Sheriff's Office officials contributed to the death of 37-year-old Mark Snyder and that authorities didn't do enough to prevent him from committing suicide.

Snyder was booked into the Marion County Jail on child molestation charges in May 2014. He was found dead in a jail cell in December 2014.

The lawsuit claims Snyder's suicide wasn't an “isolated occurrence'' at the jail, citing an inmate's suicide in September and an attempt by another inmate in May.

Marion County Sheriff spokeswoman Katie Carlson tells the Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1TEvo11) that the department doesn't comment on pending litigation.
