Fort Wayne Fire Department fights apartment fire, rescues victim

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire, rescuing a victim and a cat on Wednesday evening.

It started around 9:57 P.M. when the Fort Wayne Fire Department received an alarm call for an apartment fire at the 800 block of West Wayne Street.  Once firefighters arrived on the scene, they began attacking the blaze while searching through the building.

Fire crews located and rescued a victim, providing immediate medical care before transferring care to Three Rivers Ambulance Authority. A cat was also saved and handed over to Fort Wayne Animal Control.

The fire was brought under control in about seven minutes.  The apartment sustained heavy fire and smoke damage and moderate water damage.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Assisting agencies included the Fort Wayne Police Department, North Central EMS, Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, and Fort Wayne Animal Control.
