FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A Fort Wayne man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after admitting to illegally possessing a firearm despite prior felony and domestic violence convictions.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana, 39-year-old Kenneth Porter was sentenced May 28 by Chief U.S. District Judge Holly A. Brady after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm following a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction.
Federal prosecutors said Porter received a sentence of 60 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Adam L. Mildred said Porter was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of previous convictions for robbery and domestic battery.
According to court documents, investigators found Porter in possession of a firearm despite those restrictions.
“The streets are safer with him behind bars,” Mildred said in a statement announcing the sentence.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from the Fort Wayne Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dawn R. Ransom.
Federal officials said the case was part of the Department of Justice’s Operation Take Back America initiative, which targets violent crime and other public safety threats nationwide.
