Fort Wayne Weighs New Rules on Homeless Encampments

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) Fort Wayne city leaders are considering changes to city code that would give police more authority to remove or ban homeless encampments.

The discussion comes after the city cleared a camp under the Veterans Memorial Bridge that had spilled onto the Rivergreenway Trail before Christmas. Cleanup efforts were completed by early January.

Two city council members have proposed code changes to allow law enforcement greater flexibility in addressing encampments.

Some people experiencing homelessness told WANE 15 that banning camps could put them at risk, even as they acknowledged that certain encampments create challenges for the surrounding community.

City officials have not indicated a timeline for any new code changes or how enforcement would be carried out.

Indiana will do anything except make peoples’ lives easier. We really are just foaming at the mouth to give more authority to cops to harass and assault the homeless and throw them in jail just for existing.

We’re such a shameful people.
