Fort Wayne’s Landmark Tank Moved

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO):  A Fort Wayne landmark has a new home.  The familiar M-41 Walker Bulldog tank that guarded Johnny Appleseed Park near Memorial Coliseum for decades is now the centerpiece of the new veterans section at River Cemetery on Carroll Road.

Mayor Tom Henry and other community leaders will participate in a dedication ceremony Monday at 10 a.m.

The tank, which was most likely used in the 1950s to 1960s, was originally owned the Breakfast Sertoma Club and the city’s parks and recreation department.

“The tank will be maintained by the cemetery’s perpetual care fund,” Dave McComb of McComb and Son’s Funeral Home said. He's the owner of the memorial.

He said it was way to honor veterans and keep a community treasure.

“We feel it's important to honor those who have served our country and adding a Veteran’s section and the M-41 to Riverview is just another way we can do this.”

Earlier this month the tank was transported to the cemetery with an escort by the Freedom Riders motorcycle group.
