GARY, Ind. (AP) _ Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says community members should double-down on efforts to curb violence after the northwest Indiana city saw six homicides in six days.

Freeman-Wilson said in a news conference Tuesday that reducing crime is about the community “working together,'' not “a march here or a march there.''

The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1hj5CCl ) reports Gary has seen 34 homicides so far this year, up from 20 homicides at the same point a year ago. The youngest of the six recent homicide victims was 15-year-old Daja Brookshire, who police say was shot in the back Sunday as she got out of a car.

Gary Police Chief Larry McKinley says more officers are on city streets in response to the increase in violent crime, and that the department has called in the city's top violent offenders.
