Gary Schools Keep Buses Running, But Face New Lien

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ The financially strapped Gary Community School Corp. has a payment plan to keep buses running, but faces a new lien from the Gary Sanitary District.

The Munster Times and the Post-Tribune report the Illinois Central Bus Co. released a statement late Monday saying it will continue bus service after the district secured funding to meet its contractual obligations.

However, the district owes nearly $800,000 to the Gary Sanitary District, which sent a certified letter on Oct. 10 to Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt saying the delinquent amount must be paid within 30 days.

School district attorney Robert Lewis said it is establishing a payment plan for the Sanitary District and several other creditors.

Pruitt has said the district has a deficit of $23.7 million.
