Gary to Open Bids to Demolish Ambassador Apartments

GARY, Ind. (AP) – The city of Gary plans to open bids Tuesday on proposals to demolish what was one of its tallest buildings when it opened in 1928.

Redevelopment Department demolition coordinator Cedric Kuykendall told the Post-Tribune (http://trib.in/1Fm6vkV ) about 15 contractors toured the Ambassador Apartments, which closed in 1985. The 68-unit Italianate structure was built to keep U.S. Steel managers and supervisors close to the mill.

As white flight exploded during the 1970s, the Ambassador transformed into a low-income housing complex and fell into disrepair. Bricks began falling off the building three years ago, causing city officials to close a street.
