COLUMBUS, OH (WOWO) Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says he regrets signing legislation to legalize sports betting in the state, calling it a mistake as multiple teams and athletes have been involved in gambling-related scandals.

DeWine said in a recent interview that the law, which took effect in January 2023, has created challenges for college and professional sports. The governor pointed to incidents including two Cleveland Guardians pitchers placed on paid leave amid an investigation into rigged pitches tied to betting. He also cited early issues with University of Dayton basketball players and prop bets on individual athlete performances.

DeWine has engaged with leagues including Major League Baseball, the NBA, and the NFL to address these issues, pushing for limits and stronger oversight. He emphasized that sports integrity is at stake, warning that fans need confidence that outcomes are fair and not influenced by wagers according to WTVG.

Since going live, Ohioans have wagered more than $24 billion on sports. DeWine says tighter oversight and league cooperation are essential to protect athletes and maintain trust in the games.
