INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is voicing concern about a bill that would shelter private college police departments from following the same open records law requirements as law enforcement agencies at public universities.

The Republican governor said Monday that he hasn’t decided if he will veto the bill that was approved amid a high-profile court fight between the University of Notre Dame and ESPN over the private university’s police records. But Pence says he’s a champion of the “public’s right to know” and will bring that “bias” as he considers his next step.

Private colleges presented the measure that would boost transparency at their police departments. They’re required to release only limited information about crimes.

Critics say it does little besides codifying existing federal requirements into state law.
