Governor Pence Supports Park’s Cross-Adorned Sculpture

LIBERTY, Ind. (AP) _ Gov. Mike Pence says he supports erecting a cross-adorned sculpture in a state park despite a group's contention that it constitutes a government endorsement of Christianity.

Pence said Tuesday he fully supports the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' decision to accept the donated sculpture for display at Whitewater Memorial State Park.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the eastern Indiana park honors local World War II veterans.

The wooden sculpture carved with a chain saw depicts a bald eagle perched above the phrase “All gave some; Some gave all'' and features a 14-inch-tall white cross near its base.

Attorney Rebecca Markert with the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation says the overall display promotes Christianity and “will send a message that the government only cares about the deaths of Christian soldiers.''
