Grand Jury to Review Fatal Elkhart Police Shooting

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) _ A northern Indiana prosecutor says a grand jury will review whether Elkhart police officers acted properly when they fatally shot a man who they say raised a gun toward them while trying to flee.

Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill Jr. said Friday a grand jury will convene next month to review the Sept. 23 shooting of 32-year-old Joseph Lee of Goshen.

State police investigators submitted a report on the shooting to Hill last month. Officers were trying to arrest Lee on charges he shot a 16-year-old relative of his ex-girlfriend a few days earlier in Mishawaka.

A spokesman for Hill said at the time the prosecutor would review the case and decide whether to present it to a grand jury. The grand jury is scheduled to meet Jan. 20.
