HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) _ The Indiana Court of Appeals has rejected a Hammond teenager's claim of self-defense in the shooting death of an unarmed friend.
The court in a 3-0 decision released Tuesday said a jury properly inferred that Aqueeli Walton was not acting in self-defense when he fired multiple shots at 18-year-old Cameron Sanders because any possible threat Sanders posed was eliminated with the first shot.
The (Munster) Times reports court records show Sanders came to Walton's house following a violent argument with Walton's sister. Words were exchange, and Walton shot Sanders in the chest, abdomen, right femur, elbows and ankle.
Walton, now 19, was convicted of murder last year and sentenced to 58 years in prison for the July 22, 2013, slaying of Sanders.
