INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana is adopting new risk assessments to determine when people who have been arrested should be held on bail.

The rules announced Wednesday by the Indiana Supreme Court include assessing whether a person is a flight risk or poses a public safety threat. Those who aren’t will not have to post money to be released from jail.

The new rules don’t apply to people charged with murder or who were on probation when charged with a new crime.

The changes take place immediately in nine Indiana counties that were part of a pilot program, but will expand to all Indiana courts by January 2018.

Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush says the changes are designed to provide for public safety and protect the presumption of innocence.
