Indiana Dunes State Park Project Draws Criticism at Meeting

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP): Dozens of people turned out to voice their opposition to a planned privately run banquet center at the Indiana Dunes State Park pavilion.

About 50 people spoke against the project and two voiced their support for it during Wednesday evening's hearing in Chesterton.

Save the Dunes Executive Director Nicole Barker said her group and the public “were robbed of the ability to give input'' on the project and urged the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to start the process over with more transparency.

The planned banquet center would be built on the east side of the Dunes State Park pavilion and will be elevated in an effort to maintain visibility of the beach and allow visitors to pass underneath the building.
