Indiana Grandmother Gets 50-year Term in Grandson’s Death

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A South Bend woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison on child neglect convictions for ignoring the abuse of three grandchildren, including one who died.

A St. Joseph County judge ordered the sentence against 53-year-old Dellia Castile during a court hearing Thursday.

A jury convicted her last month on charges of ignoring abuse by her son in her home that included the November 2011 death of 10-year-old Tramelle Sturgis. WSBT-TV reports that Castile intends to appeal her case.

The boy’s father, Terry Sturgis, was convicted of murder and other charges in Tramelle’s death and the abuse of his other two sons. He’s been sentenced to 140 years in prison.
