Indiana Police Standoff Ends with Man Found Dead in Basement

GRIFFITH, Ind. (AP) – Northwestern Indiana police say a man involved in an hours-long police standoff has been found dead in the basement of a home.

Griffith Police Chief Greg Mance tells The Munster Times reports the 32-year-old man apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mance says officers were called to the home about five miles south of Gary around 1:40 a.m. Friday. Officers summoned a SWAT team after seeing an armed man inside the home and he refused to come outside.

After the SWAT team arrived, an unarmed man was released from the home along with an adult woman who told officers her 6-year-old daughter remained inside.

Mance says officers entered the home about 8:30 a.m., rescued the sleeping girl from a bedroom and then found the man's body in the basement.
