Indiana to Pay $324K to Family of Slain Hospital Patient

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The state of Indiana is paying $324,000 to the family of a 59-year-old psychiatric patient killed by his roommate at a Richmond hospital.

The Indianapolis Star the agreement was reached roughly a year after Charles “Ricky'' Boyer's family filed a document that's required before a public entity can be sued.

Boyer was beaten to death in September 2013 while under the care of Richmond State Hospital.

A criminal complaint states his roommate, 32-year-old Daniel Davis, admitted to employees that he stabbed and beat Boyer. Davis pleaded guilty to murder last September and was sentenced to 55 years in prison.

The attorney representing Boyer's estate says it was clear the hospital didn't do everything it should've to protect Boyer. He says the family is pleased with the settlement.
