Indianapolis boy kills self with gun from mother’s purse

(Jeff Bowman/21Alive)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indianapolis police say a 2-year-old boy shot and killed himself after taking a gun from his mother’s purse on the kitchen counter when she turned away.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release early Thursday that mother is cooperating with detectives who questioned her before she was released.

Police say officers were sent to the home about 9 p.m. Wednesday when they found the boy with a single gunshot wound. The boy was taken to a children’s hospital where he died.

Police say only the mother and child were at home the time of the shooting. They were not immediately identified.
