INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indianapolis is set to receive $2 million in federal money that will help pay for a summer jobs program for disadvantaged youth.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the city is among 11 communities that will get a cut of a $21 million federal grant that will also pay for violence reduction efforts and meals for needy children. The grant was announced Monday by President Barack Obama’s administration.

Kids who are hired under the program will be paid $8 per hour and will work between 20 and 32 hours a week. The program is expected to launch this summer.

Boosters hope the city’s youth employment efforts will give summer jobs to thousands of kids in the coming years.
