INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana’s first female state Supreme Court justice since 1999 says she expects to formally join the high court in early November.

Loretta Rush was named to the court Sept. 14 by Gov. Mitch Daniels to fill a vacancy left when Justice Frank Sullivan Jr. retired in July to teach law.

Rush tells the Journal & Courier she plans to remain in Lafayette and commute daily to Indianapolis once she joins the court in early November. A public ceremony is planned for mid-November.

The 54-year-old Rush will become Indiana’s second female justice. The state’s first, Myra Selby, stepped down in 1999 after five years on the court.

Rush has been a Tippecanoe County juvenile court judge for 14 years. She also spent another 14 years in private practice.
