Inmate Found Dead In St. Joseph County Jail

A man has been found dead while in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail.

Indiana State Police say 34-year-old Dustin Pate was found unresponsive in his cell around 12:35 Friday afternoon during routine checks.

Jail staff attempted life-saving measures until medics arrived, but Pate was pronounced dead at the jail.

Investigators say no foul play is suspected. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, February 1, at Western Michigan University.

Pate had been jailed since January 19 and faced multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, resisting law enforcement, battery, auto theft and disarming an officer. Those charges stemmed from a pursuit and violent confrontation with police in Granger and Mishawaka.

Pate was scheduled for an initial court hearing February 5
