Licensing board to hear petition to suspend Fort Wayne doctor’s license

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Indiana Medical Licensing Board is set to hear a petition to pull the license of a Fort Wayne doctor accused of over-prescribing pain pills.

The board will meet in Indianapolis to discuss a petition from the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, which argues that Dr. Michael Cozzi is a “clear and immediate danger to public health and safety.”

The Journal Gazette reports he prescribed drugs like Oxycodone and Hydrocodone to 1,700 separate people in the first 38 days of 2016, and investigators say some of those prescriptions came despite patients displaying “serious risk behaviors.”

Investigators add that some of those patients have even died as a result of using the drugs, and the petition is asking for at least a 90-day suspension while the investigation continues.

Cozzi was arrested Tuesday, but has since been released on bond.
