ALBION, Ind. (WOWO): A 35-year-old chimpanzee will be going to a place where many other two-legged creatures go to retire: Florida.

“Tarzan” is now enjoying life at the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida. He spent about 20 years at Black Pines Animal Sanctuary in Albion.

The elder chimp left Black Pines on Thursday, about six years after his longtime companion Coby died in 2009. Since then, he’s been living alone, and officials at the sanctuary wanted Tarzan to socialize with other chimps. Chimpanzees, who can live to be up to 50 years old, are social creatures.

The Save the Chimps sanctuary features 12 man-made islands about three acres each, and chimps live in “family groups” of 12 to 26 members. The chimps live with other chimps that, while they may not be related by blood, get along with each other and socialize.

Tarzan is described as having “a laid-back demeanor and child-like disposition.” Fans of Tarzan can follow his progress at the sanctuary by visiting the Save the Chimps sanctuary website.

Fans flocked to the Black Pines Animal Sanctuary Facebook page to wish Tarzan well in his life in Florida.
