Man Found Dead in Gary Church Hours after Emergency Call

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ A county official says he's looking into how crews responded to an emergency call to a Gary church where a man was discovered dead inside several hours later.

That review comes after Ruth Sutton says relatives found her 44-year-old brother Burt Sanders slumped against a wall about 9 a.m. Saturday when they arrived to clean the Church of God in Christ on Gary's west side.

Lake County E911 dispatch supervisor Brian Hitchcock tells the Post-Tribune that Sanders called about 2 a.m. Saturday for help. Hitchcock said he'll interview those who handled the call and dispatched an ambulance.

Sanders was a South Shore Line transit police officer for five years. Transit Police Chief Bob Byrd tells The (Munster) Times that Sanders had been hospitalized until Thursday for about a week with pneumonia.
