Man gets 12 years in guard’s hit-and-run death

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP): A northwestern Indiana man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the hit-and-run death of a jail guard struck while jogging with co-workers.

Chicago's WBBM-TV reports 44-year-old Jason Cozmanoff was sentenced Friday two months after a jury convicted him in the March 2012 death of 25-year-old Lake County jail guard Britney Meux. He was convicted of reckless homicide, criminal recklessness and 11 other counts.

Cozmanoff's first trial in June ended in a mistrial when a jury pool member said he witnessed the accident, which injured three other correction officers.

Investigators say Cozmanoff was driving at 65 miles per hour at the time of the crash. Crash scene evidence showed he didn't brake as he slammed into the group as they ran on the side of the road.
