Muncie student diagnosed with a rare strain of meningitis…

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ Parents in Muncie are on alert after a middle school student was diagnosed with a rare strain of meningitis.

The Star Press reports officials with Muncie Community Schools notified parents this week about the case involving a student at Wilson Middle School.

Delaware County Health Department nurse Nancy Wagner says only 30 to 40 cases of the aggressive strain of meningitis that the student contracted are reported statewide each year. The illness is spread through saliva but is not airborne.

Wagner says close contacts of the student and people at high risk have been treated with antibiotics or urged to get treatment. No further cases have been reported.

Wagner says the student is recovering.
