Nationwide Alert Issued for Gary Slaying Suspect

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ A Gary police spokeswoman says authorities have issued a nationwide alert for a slaying suspect.

Cpl. Gabrielle King said Tuesday that 21-year-old Mark Cherry of Lake Station man is considered dangerous.

The Times of Munster reports Cherry is charged with murder in what is believed to have been a gunbattle over drugs in Gary.

Cherry was wounded in the gunfight in which 22-year-old Rolando A. Correa of Gary was killed.

Police say they weren't informed when Cherry was released from a suburban Chicago hospital in late February. Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois, cites privacy laws and says police usually post guards outside the rooms of criminal suspects, but Gary police say they lack jurisdiction in Illinois.
