Nickel Plate Trail Now Part of Bicycle Highway

PERU, Ind. (AP) _ A north central Indiana trail and dozens of miles of roads has been designated part of a national bike route that runs from Canada to Kentucky.

The Kokomo Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1hAuwgx) the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials designated the Nickel Plate Trail and roads in Howard and Tipton counties to be part U.S. Bicycle Route No. 35.

In Indiana, the 360-mile route runs from the Michigan state line in LaPorte County to Jeffersonville, just north of Louisville, Kentucky. The bicycle route connects county roads, city streets, several state highways and a variety of off-road trails.

Officials say the route will later be extended through Kentucky and Tennessee as it makes its way to the Gulf Shores.
