Northwestern Indiana Sculpture Commemorates 9-11

WESTVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ A large marble sculpture commemorating the Sept. 11 attacks is set to be dedicated at Purdue University North Central in Westville.

The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/1oufaHs ) the piece known as Lexeme VIII to be unveiled Thursday is a gift of artist Bill Barrett and his wife, Debora.

University Chancellor James Dworkin calls the sculpture a moving reminder of an event that must never be forgotten. The sculpture will remain on permanent outdoor display on the campus about 25 miles west of Gary.

Barrett, who attended high school in South Bend, has a studio in New York City just 10 blocks from what is now known as Ground Zero. In the aftermath of the attacks, Barrett began a series of work he called “Lexeme,'' which grew to 15 pieces.
