COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP): Backers of Common Core are pushing back against an Ohio House effort to repeal the national learning standards before year's end.
 
In a letter to House Rules Committee members, Ohio's nine metropolitan chambers of commerce said “Ohio would be moving backwards'' to reject the standards, which set new English and math goals for elementary and secondary students. The panel passed legislation Wednesday that would repeal the benchmarks.
 
Committee Chairman Matt Huffman, a Lima Republican, said the standards need to be revisited because Ohio's public debate was inadequate and based on misinformation.
 
Aaron Churchill of the Fordham Institute, an education think tank that supports the standards, said the guidelines were developed by the bipartisan National Governors Association in cooperation with school superintendents. Implementation that began this fall has taken years.
