MERCER COUNTY, Ohio (WOWO): Mercer County, Ohio residents are taking strides to prevent suicide.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. The fundraising walk will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The funds will be used to support research, education, advocacy, suicide prevention initiatives and programs, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.

“Much more needs to be done to prevent suicide,” Carol Griesdorn, co-chair of the event, said. “Yet, suicide and the underlying mental disorders that can sometimes lead to suicide continue to be surrounded by misinformation and stigma. This walk is about reducing that stigma, raising awareness and raising needed funds for research and local prevention programs.”

Walker registration begins at 9 a.m. and opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m .
