SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ The organization that promotes downtown South Bend estimates an electrical outage that lasted almost three days cost businesses at least $3 million.
Downtown South Bend Inc. director Aaron Perri wrote in a memorandum that downtown businesses spent more than $125,000 on temporary power solutions to prevent further losses after an electrical fire late May 15 cut power to more than 800 businesses and homes.
The South Bend Tribune reports that Perri says the estimate is based on self-reported numbers from a sample of businesses affected by the outage. He says it could have had double the economic impact if businesses hadn't used temporary power.
The outage occurred during the graduation weekend for the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College.
