FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Parkview Research Center are trying to curb teen and young adult suicides in Indiana thanks to a grant.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded the hospital $317,000 to be paid out over the course of 18 months. The money will be used to research the benefit of using telecommunications to treat depression and thoughts of suicide. Video chat and phone communications have worked in other medical purposes, but it’s untested for depression and suicide.

He says that they will target 14 to 24 year olds. “We know that group is vulnerable,” Dr. Mirro said. “We see problems when they are transitioning from childhood to adolescence or when they go from high school to college.”

A recent study showed that Indiana has the highest rate of teens who have considered suicide in the United States, and the second highest rate for teens that did commit suicide.
