Plea Deal Reached in State Hospital Beating Death

RICHMOND, Ind. (AP): A man has agreed to plead guilty but mentally ill to a murder charge in the death of a fellow patient at an Indiana psychiatric hospital.

The plea agreement between 31-year-old Daniel Davis and Wayne County prosecutors calls for him to receive a 55-year sentence for last September's death of 59-year-old Charles Boyer at Richmond State Hospital. The Palladium-Item reports that a sentencing date wasn't immediately set.

Authorities say no previous troubles had been reported between Davis and Boyer during several months as roommates before the beating attack.

Davis is from Indianapolis and has a criminal history that includes battery charges.

His attorney had filed an intent to present a mental illness defense, while a judge had ruled Davis competent to stand trial.
