MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) – An eastern Indiana deputy prosecutor says two Muncie police officers were justified in shooting a man armed with a knife.

Delaware County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said Monday that he made that determination after reviewing the state police investigation into the death of 31-year-old Larry Step of Muncie on June 4. Hoffman says it was clear the officers acted in self-defense as Step repeatedly ignored their commands to drop the knife and came at them quickly.

Hoffman says the officers shot Stepp five times. Toxicology tests indicated he was under the influence of controlled substances.

Police Chief Steve Stewart told The (Muncie) Star Press the two officers, who have not been identified, are expected to return to active duty soon after being placed on administrative leave.
