CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) – The first Republican in 50 years to win a countywide office in northwestern Indiana's Lake County has resigned for health reasons.
 
Lake County Assessor Hank Adams submitted his resignation on Tuesday. Jean Shepherd tells The Times of Munster that her 77-year-old husband decided he was too exhausted and in pain from a yearlong fight with cancer to continue in office.
 
Adams was a township assessor in suburban Lake County for 16 years before winning the county office by 610 votes in the 2010 election. He defeated a Democratic candidate who faced misdemeanor perjury charges that she lied under oath for not telling Indiana officials she also had a Michigan driver's license.

A caucus of Republican precinct committee members in Indiana's second most-populous county will pick a replacement for Adams.
