FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): City officials broke ground on a major part of Fort Wayne’s riverfront development project Thursday morning.
Promenade Park is part of phase 1 of the three-phase development, which will take place on both the north and south banks of the St. Marys River between the historic Wells Street bridge and Harrison Street bridge.
The 4,500-square-foot park will also include a playground, named after PNC, according to the Journal Gazette. PNC obtained the naming rights after making a $250,000 grant to the project.
Construction on this first phase will take place until November of next year, at the earliest. It’ll definitely have an impact on riverside activities, although Riverfront Fort Wayne’s Megan Butler says not entirely.
“We’ll still be doing our historic boat tours through September, and Fort Wayne Outfitters will still be doing their paddle socials every Monday, you can still do all of that.”
She tells our Partners in News at ABC 21 the public won’t be allowed in the area from the water levels on both sides of the St. Mary’s River to the top of the riverbank, so some events and attractions will still be happening, but at new venues or launch points.
