Study Shows 1.1 Million Hoosiers Turn to Food Banks

FORT WAYNE Ind. (WOWO): A new Feeding America report says that 1 in 6 Indiana residents, an estimated 1.1 million Hoosiers, rely on meal services or food pantries to feed themselves and their families.

The study by Feeding Indiana's Hungry says out of the households that use those food programs, 43 percent include children under the age of 18, while 25 percent contain a senior over the age of 60.

Feeding Indiana's Hungry partnered with Feeding America to observe household demographics, income, and various challenges of Indiana residents.

The numbers revealed 22 percent of households include someone who is a veteran or who has ever served in the military. Also, 69 percent of affiliated charitable agencies employ unpaid staff or are operated exclusively by volunteers.

According to a press release, it is the first nationally-representative study that assesses past and current members of the U.S. military and adult students who receive charitable food assistance.
