SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A second northern Indiana teenager implicated in the 2014 shooting death of a South Bend toddler has been sentenced to prison.

Court documents indicate that 16-year-old Cedric Washington Jr. was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison. Washington pleaded guilty in February to assisting a criminal with a gang enhancement in the death of John Swoveland Jr. 

Authorities say the 2-year-old died when he was struck by a stray bullet from a gunfight between two rival gangs several blocks away.

Prosecutors say the boy, who was playing in his yard, was struck by a stray bullet fired by 19-year-old Robert L. Griffin. 

Griffin was convicted of murder in February and sentenced to 60 years in prison.

A third suspect pleaded guilty last month, and several others are awaiting trial.
