FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — A plan to temporarily fill nearly an acre of wetlands in Fort Wayne to support construction of a new transmission line for the local Google data center is cleared to move forward, according to state and federal officials.

American Electric Power (AEP) submitted the proposal in August, seeking to build a temporary access road through protected wetlands so crews can install metal poles for the line, which will connect to the grid near Paul Harding Junior High School.

On November 5, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined that the project does not require a federal permit. In its notice, the Corps stated that the work does not involve the discharge of dredged or fill material into waters of the United States or adjacent wetlands, meaning a Department of the Army permit is not necessary.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) confirmed that the project is permitted to advance under state rules.

AEP says all impacted wetlands will be restored once construction is complete.
