Timing essential in Indiana Gay Marriage Battle

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana lawmakers are gauging their timing carefully as they weigh when to introduce a measure that would add a ban on same-sex marriage to the state constitution.

Lawmakers passed the measure in 2011 but must pass it again in 2013 or 2014 so it can go to voters.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma said before the election that the measure could move swiftly through his chamber, but he didn’t include it in a package of ideas House Republicans will push in 2013.

Republican Rep. Eric Turner of Cicero led the fight for the measure’s passage last year but hasn’t indicated whether he’ll push for it come January.

The timing could be influenced by other priorities, including the new two-year budget lawmakers need to write.
