UPDATE: Coroner Rules Manner of Death for Whitley County Inmate

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WOWO): Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne are still investigating the death of a Whitley County Jail inmate after he was found dead in his cell early Monday morning.


Now, the Whitley County Coroner has ruled the manner of death for 51-year-old Brian Gurchiek of Columbia City.

Preliminary investigation indicates that during a routine check around 1:30 a.m., officers found Gurchiek unconscious and unresponsive in his cell.


Gurchiek was pronounced dead at the scene after medics attempted for approximately 40 minutes to save his life.

According to the Journal Gazette, the cause of Gurchiek's death was ruled as asphyxiation after he hung himself.

Gurchiek's suicide came almost a week after he was arrested and the morning before he was scheduled to appear in court.
